He was born July 15, 1824, in Saratoga County, New York. He died July 22, 1914 in Malta, New York.
George worked as a hunter, cook, and a guide in Adirondack Mountains. He became famous for his cooking skills after being hired to work at Moon’s Lake house beside Saratoga Springs.
Most of the meals he prepared with wild meat or duck. After working at the Moon’s Lakehouse, he started his own restaurant it was called, Crum’s. In his restaurant, he was known for serving thin-sliced potatoes that were fried.
The fried potatoes were known as “Saratoga chips.” They are now called potato chips.
Many people say George made potato chips by accident. And some say his sister made them.
As far as what history has recorded Mr. George Speck was the creator.
Mariahh Riddick is a student at Wylie East Junior High.
