Why We Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

By Marriahh Riddick/Young Scholar
We celebrate this holiday every year on March 17. St. Patrick’s Day honors Saint Patrick, who is the patron saint of Ireland.

Saint Patrick lived a long time ago. He helped teach the people of Ireland about Christianity. One story says that he used a shamrock, which is a small green plant with three leaves, to explain his beliefs. Today, the shamrock is an important symbol of this holiday.

On St. Patrick’s Day, many people wear green clothes. If you do not wear green, some people might playfully pinch you. Green is important because Ireland is known for its green hills and land. Some cities even have big parades with music, dancing, and decorations. People celebrate by spending time with family and friends and learning about Irish culture.

St. Patrick’s Day is not only celebrated in Ireland, but also in the United States and other countries. It is a day to have fun and remember what it’s about.
