The Kiwanis Club of Greater Abilene named Brad Birchum as the Layperson of the Year on April 10, in a ceremony led by previous recipient Cameo Harvey.
The honor, presented annually by the organization, recognizes Birchum’s extensive community service and volunteer work spanning multiple organizations throughout the Abilene area.
“This award celebrates those who exemplify selfless service beyond their professional roles,” Harvey said during the presentation.
Birchum, who has served 31 years with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department in various capacities, including patrol officer and lieutenant, is currently in his third term as the Taylor County Commissioner for Precinct 3.
A member of Aldersgate Methodist Church since 1997, Birchum serves on the church’s Board of Trustees and participates in multiple faith-based organizations, including the Big Country Emmaus Community where he recently served as Lay Director.
His community involvement extends to the Taylor County Expo Center and active membership in the local Kiwanis Club, where he serves on the board and supports initiatives like the Kids Need Kiwanis Golf Tournament.
Birchum, an Abilene native, lives with his wife, Terri, and has two sons who have served in the military — Brent, a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, and Bryan, who served 10 years in the U.S. Navy.
When not engaged in community service, Birchum enjoys golfing and spending time with his family.
