The girl next door

By Jack Walker

“This is a time to honor women,” said the boss, and probably the boss’ boss lady.

If men weren’t so compelled by women in all aspects of their lives, they would probably still be pushing giant rocks and using primitive tools, like in the Neanderthal time.

But thanks to the exotic beauties that the good Lord blessed us with, men have been doing things to impress women since day one.

There’s a story everywhere and so many throughout history, that captivate the masses, names that resonate, and bring about all sorts of different emotions, discussions and pursuits.

How iconic is the girl next door? And what is the measure of her impact?

Is she a Siren, like Cleopatra or Helen of Troy? Is she a trophy to admire from a distance, like Aphrodite the Greek goddess or Marilyn Monroe?

Surely, there’s a story there somewhere. Does she even know her magnitude in terms of when admiration?

Does she even consider herself worthy of the story? What parallels can she draw? Maybe “the boss’s daughter” and heiress to the throne.

Most of the girls next door don’t even know they are worthy of a story in the newspaper and maintaining the subtle shyness that’s emblematic of the gangster queen, or princess of the neighborhood, always there when you need her, but never when you really want her, surely you have to work a little harder to catch that firefly.

And if it was up to her, she would prefer a story about Kamala Harris. But that’s probably already one out there somewhere.
