Reverend Leo Scott Honored
Reverend Scott was honored last year on his birth date by having the day named for him. This year the City of Abilene added to that honor by naming North Sixth Street from Pine to Treadaway for Rev. Leo Scott. The day opened with an enthusiastic crowd listening to several of the wonderful choirs in the area at the Abilene Civic Center. It then moved to the New Light Baptist Church where they remarked that “now when you see the tree planted on the corner and look up at the street sign – you can say ‘That was a Holy Man.’” Among many firsts mentioned was that he was the first black City Councilman for Abilene.Mayor Archibald opened his remarks by praising the choirs’ rendition of “O Happy Day” saying it would ring in his head all week and he hoped it would stay with him “all my life.” He was honored to have voted for Rev. Scott when he first ran as were the other two city councilmen present. He presented the first of the signs to the Scott family and told those attending “This man of God has a legacy. Remember what he stood for and what he accomplished.” I now proclaim that North Sixth Street from Treadaway to Pine Street will now be known as Reverend Leo Scott Street.”*See more photos from this story in the PICTURE STORIES AROUND ABILENE section*
