Abilene to celebrate Juneteenth 2026 with freedom, culture and community events June 19-21
A three-day Juneteenth celebration is set to take place in Abilene from June 19 to June 21, centering on the theme, “Built From Struggle, Designed for Greatness.” Co-hosted by the Abilene Black Chamber of Commerce and Let Us Breathe, the family-friendly event features free admission and will be held primarily at Stevenson Park.
Juneteenth commemorates the historic moment when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to deliver the announcement that all enslaved people had been freed, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The annual event provides an opportunity for the community to gather, reflect, and learn more about the significance of the day.
Juneteenth was made a U.S. federal holiday in 2021. On Saturday, June 19, most government offices, the U.S. Postal Service, banks, and some businesses will be closed for the holiday.
